Perhaps one of the most incredible sculptures in the world. It was created by an unknown French sculptor in the 19th century. It's kept in India's Salar Jung Museum.
The sculpture is known under the name "Double statue of Mephistopheles and Marguerite". The fact is that on one side of the statue is a male figure, and on the other - a female figure. Behind the sculpture there is a large mirror, so that you can see both figures and appreciate the skill of the author of this unusual creation. The sculpture is created from a single piece of the most ancient sycamore tree.

Pygmalion and his Statue
Artist: Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée (French, 1725–1805)
Date: 1777
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Sinebrychoff Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland
Description
Pygmalion, a sculptor from Amathus on Cyprus, was discouraged by the morals of women and chose to focus on his art. He carved a realistic statue of his ideal woman out of ivory and named her Galatea. Pygmalion prayed to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, to make Galatea come to life. Aphrodite answered his prayers and brought the statue to life. Pygmalion and Galatea married and had a child named Paphos.

Édouard Joseph Dantan (French, 1848-1897) A corner of the workshop, 1880 Oil on canvas, 98 x 130 cm Musée des Avelines, Saint-Cloud, France © Musée des Avelines
Dantan's works followed the academic tradition of painting, and were praised by his contemporaries. His technical mastery is illustrated by such paintings as Un coin d'atelier (1880), where he depicts his father working on a bas-relief in his studio, seen from behind. The studio is cluttered with paintings and sculptures. In the foreground, a nude woman is taking a break from modelling. A critic praised the painting for following all the rules of trompe-l'oeil and stereoscopic photography.

Beethoven, bronze by Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929)
Bonus extra: Beethoven's symphony no. 9, second movement (molto vivace)
Beethoven was completely deaf when he composed this symphony, because music lived inside him. And his name will shine forever.

Years ago when I visited Chesterwood I fell in love with this beautiful sculpture. Daniel said he made this statue "for no particular reason" other than he felt like making it. I'm so glad he did. This was one of my biggest reasons for returning to Chesterwood again.
